To Our Valued AWIS Members, Partners and Stakeholders:
I am writing to let you know that after careful consideration, the AWIS Governing Board and I have made the difficult, but necessary, decision to cancel the April 23, 2020 AWIS Innovation & Inclusion Summit in Houston, TX. The key factor contributing to this decision is the swift spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) and our priority in keeping all AWIS stakeholders safe.
We believe that it is an important reflection on AWIS’ values to make this decision now and to allow our members, sponsors and speakers to make other arrangements. AWIS is noticing that an increasing number of academic and corporate organizations are establishing strict travel bans for their staff, which we expect will rise now that the virus has been named a pandemic by the World Health Organization. We anticipate registration cancellations would have affected attendance by at least 35-40 percent. We are witnessing an unprecedented number of event cancellations in our industry, demonstrating the scope, and shared concern, of our peers.
Decisions like this one affect many people, and we want to do whatever we can to help minimize the cost and inconvenience of this cancellation to registered individuals. Individual event registrations are refundable through March 31, 2020; please visit this page for further information on how to receive a refund for your individual event registration or to donate your fee to AWIS as a tax-deductible donation. Regarding travel, several airlines are waiving rebooking fees during this outbreak, including Delta, American Airlines, and United, and many hotels have cancellation policies of up to 24 hours prior to arrival.
Thank you for your continued support and understanding as we navigate this challenging health environment together.
